How to opt out of Experian Marketing Services

  1. 1

    Open Experian's privacy choice page

Go to consumerprivacy.experian.com and choose the opt-out you want.

  2. 2

    Pick the right opt-out

Opting out of targeted advertising stops ads built from Experian's marketing data. State privacy rights requests (opt out of sale or sharing) are made online, by mail or by email.

  3. 3

    Or use email or phone

Email optout@experian.com, or call 1-833-210-4615 for state privacy requests.

  4. 4

    Handle prescreened credit offers separately

Experian runs OptOutPrescreen.com with the other credit bureaus. Calling 888-567-8688 pauses offers for five years or opts you out permanently.

Watch out for

  • Experian says opting out doesn't remove data it has already shared with third parties.
  • Online opt-outs based on cookies and the DAA tool expire, and Experian says you renew them every five years on each device.
  • Mail and marketing lists from other companies, such as DMA members, need their own opt-outs. DMAchoice.org handles DMA members and charges a fee for a 10-year removal.

Your rights

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.

Canada: PIPEDA. You can withdraw your consent to a company using your personal information and ask it to correct what it holds. If it doesn't respond, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

United Kingdom: UK GDPR. You can ask any company to erase your personal data and to stop using it for direct marketing. It has one month to respond. If it doesn't, you can complain to the ICO.

European Union: GDPR. You have the right to have your personal data erased and to object to its use for direct marketing. Companies must respond within one month, and you can complain to your national data protection authority if they don't.

Australia: Privacy Act. You can tell a company to stop using your information for direct marketing and ask it to correct what it holds. If it doesn't act, you can complain to the OAIC.
