Step by step

  1. 1

    Register on Indiana's list

Use the Attorney General's Do Not Call page. Any Indiana resident can register a home, wireless or VoIP number, at any time, for free.

  2. 2

    Also register nationally

Add the number at donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 from that phone. If you register online, click the link in the confirmation email within 72 hours.

  3. 3

    Know when the list updates

Indiana publishes the list quarterly, on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. Your number stays on future lists unless you move or ask to be removed.

  4. 4

Report calls that break the law

File a complaint with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division online or by mail. Include the telemarketing company's name and where the call came from. You can report suspected robocalls even if your number isn't on the list.

Watch out for

  • Some callers are exempt, including charities, newspapers and licensed insurance and real estate agents.
  • Survey and political calls aren't sales calls, so they fall outside the Do Not Call law.
  • If your wireless number is registered, telemarketers can't send you sales texts either.
  • Robocalls are a separate issue. You can report them to the Attorney General regardless of the list.

What stays out there

Registering stops legitimate telemarketers from calling. It doesn't take your number out of data broker files or people-search listings, which is where many cold callers and scammers get it.

If calls keep coming from companies you've never dealt with, look at where your number is listed. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. See how it works at serus.ai.
