How to opt out of Searchbug, Inc.

  1. 1

    Open the CCPA page

Go to searchbug.com/ccpa.aspx and press the submit request button to reach the Contact Us form.

  2. 2

    Pick the reason and subject

Choose "CCPA Request" if you live in California, or "Opt-Out Request" if you live elsewhere. Type "Do Not Sell" as the subject. For deletion of non-public information, the subject is "Record Deletion" instead.

  3. 3

    Fill in your details

Add your name, email and phone number. In the description, put the address exactly as it appears on your ID.

  4. 4

    Attach ID

Upload a photo of a driver's license, government ID or legal document. Searchbug says it needs this to identify you, and without it the request isn't processed. Screenshots of your records are optional.

  5. 5

    Wait up to 45 days

Searchbug will verify your phone number or email as part of the check.

Watch out for

  • Searchbug states that email, postal mail and phone requests are sent back to the form.
  • A government ID upload is required, which is more than most people-search opt-outs ask for.
  • Searchbug says its reports come from third-party data brokers and providers, so a source broker can still hold your record.
  • Deletion won't cover public records such as property and criminal records, which Searchbug lists as exceptions.
  • People with court orders, protected status under Daniel's Law, or covered roles (judges, prosecutors, law enforcement) use the same form with a matching subject and their documents.

Your rights

Searchbug says it isn't currently required to take part in California's DROP, so a DROP request won't reach it.

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
