Questions about scams

How do scammers get your information?

Mostly from places that are legal and public. People-search sites and data brokers sell names, phone numbers, home addresses, relatives and past addresses in one profile. Data breaches leak emails, passwords and phone numbers that end up on criminal forums. Social media fills in the rest: where you work, your kids' names, when you're away. Scammers combine these to make a message sound like it comes from someone who knows you.

How can you spot a scam?

Watch for pressure and an unusual way to pay. A scam usually wants you to act right now, keep it secret, or pay by gift card, crypto, wire transfer or a payment app. It often arrives out of the blue, from a number or address that isn't the company's own. When in doubt, stop, and contact the company or agency through a number or website you look up yourself.

What should you do if you've been scammed?

Act fast. Call your bank or card issuer to stop or reverse the payment, change any password you shared and turn on two-step verification. If you gave out your Social Security number, freeze your credit with the three bureaus. Keep every message and receipt, then report it.

Where do you report a scam?

In the US, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and to the FBI at ic3.gov if you lost money online. Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block the sender. Report fake profiles and messages in the app where you got them.
