Use the privacy request page for a legal deletion
Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, Utah and Virginia can file a deletion request on the state privacy rights page. Verify your identity. The site then responds within 30 days.
Watch out for
- Records come from public sources, so SearchPublicRecords warns that a record can still appear in background searches after a deletion request.
- New data with a different spelling of your name, other initials or another address can show up as a separate record and may need its own request.
- The privacy request email on the California registry is privacyinfo@searchpublicrecords.com, for requests that don't fit the form.

Does it come back?
SearchPublicRecords says new data with different spellings, initials or addresses may not be fully removable and repeat requests may be needed. Search your name every few months and file again if a new record appears.
Your rights
SearchPublicRecords is on the California data broker registry as Civil Data Research, LLC. Its 2024 registry figures list a median of 3 days to respond to deletion requests and to opt-out requests.
California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.
California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.
Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
