Shopify opt-out privacy.shopify.com

How to remove yourself from Shopify

Shopify is an e-commerce platform, not a data broker. To erase your own Shopify data, use the Erase my data option in Shopify's privacy controls after deactivating your stores and accounts. Shopify says it can take up to 30 days. Data a store holds about you as a customer goes through that store.

How to opt out of Shopify

  1. 1

Work out which kind of data you mean

Shopify's help center separates deleting a store's data from deleting your personal data across Shopify. If you shopped at a store, the merchant holds that order and customer data.

  2. 2

    Deactivate your stores and accounts

Shopify's help article says you must first deactivate all stores and accounts tied to your email address. The erasure is irreversible, so export anything you need first.

  3. 3

Choose Erase my data in Shopify Privacy controls

Start from Shopify's privacy page and use the Erase my data option described in the help article.

  4. 4

For a customer record at a store, ask the merchant

Shopify's merchant help page says store owners, or staff with the right permissions, can complete a customer's access or deletion request from the Shopify admin. Contact the store you bought from.

  5. 5

Delete a Shop app account separately

The Shop app has its own page for account deletion at shop.app/delete-account.

Watch out for

  • Erasure is irreversible and Shopify requires you to deactivate every store and account on your email first.
  • Shopify says processing can take up to 30 days, and its help article says deletion generally follows within about 10 business days.
  • Deleting a store's data doesn't automatically delete your personal data across Shopify.
  • Merchants keep their own copy of customer and order data, so Shopify's tool doesn't clear what a store holds about you.

Does it come back?

Shopify doesn't publish a relisting policy. There is no public listing to come back, but any store you buy from again creates a new customer record.

Your rights

Shopify's help center describes access and deletion requests under privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA, and says merchants handle customer requests for their own stores.

General information, not legal advice.
