How to opt out of ChexSystems
- 1
Go to the opt-out page
Open chexsystems.com/optout. ChexSystems says the request excludes your name from prescreen lists used to send credit or insurance solicitations.
- 2
File through the Consumer Portal or by phone
ChexSystems says you can file through its Consumer Portal or by calling 877.678.6885. This is the standard opt-out, and it lasts five years.
- 3
Decide whether you want it permanent
For a permanent opt-out, complete ChexSystems's Permanent Opt Out Election form. It asks for a driver's license or state ID, a Social Security card and proof of address dated within the last 90 days.
- 4
Return the form before the five years run out
If you don't return the completed permanent form, ChexSystems says your exclusion expires five years after the original request.
Watch out for
- The opt-out covers prescreen lists only. The opt-out page doesn't describe it as deleting your ChexSystems report.
- The standard opt-out is for people 21 and older. ChexSystems says consumers under 21 aren't considered for prescreened offers unless they give specific consent, and opting in takes a mailed request.
- Someone acting for you needs to send the request by mail with a notarized power of attorney or notarized written instructions from you.
- You can still get marketing from companies that don't use ChexSystems data to build their lists.
- ChexSystems also has a security freeze, which is a separate tool from the opt-out.

Does it come back?
The standard opt-out expires after five years, so put a reminder in your calendar. A permanent opt-out needs the signed form and ID copies.
Your rights
California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.
California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.
Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
