Equifax says you'll need to give personal information so it can complete the request, and it may ask for details such as name, address or email to verify who you are.
- 3

Call 1-866-295-6801. Equifax lists hours as 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. ET Monday to Friday and 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. ET weekends, excluding holidays.

Watch out for
- Opting out doesn't change your credit report. Equifax says credit report information is retained and can be shared as the Fair Credit Reporting Act permits.
- Prescreened credit offers are a separate opt-out: Equifax points to optoutprescreen.com or 1-888-567-8688.
- A request from an authorized agent needs the consumer's signed written permission.

To appeal a response, use the Privacy Contact Form or write to the Chief Privacy Officer, Equifax Inc., 1550 Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.
Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
Canada: PIPEDA. You can withdraw your consent to a company using your personal information and ask it to correct what it holds. If it doesn't respond, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
European Union: GDPR. You have the right to have your personal data erased and to object to its use for direct marketing. Companies must respond within one month, and you can complain to your national data protection authority if they don't.
United Kingdom: UK GDPR. You can ask any company to erase your personal data and to stop using it for direct marketing. It has one month to respond. If it doesn't, you can complain to the ICO.
Australia: Privacy Act. You can tell a company to stop using your information for direct marketing and ask it to correct what it holds. If it doesn't act, you can complain to the OAIC.
