How to opt out of Owler, Inc.
- 1
Open the Owler opt-out form
Go to corp.owler.com/request-removal. The page is called the Owler Opt-Out Form.
- 2
Fill it in with an email you can open
Owler says it uses what you enter to check that you hold the email in question and to find your information. Use an address that you control, since Owler may need to reach it to verify you.
- 3
Submit and wait for processing
Owler says that once your request is processed it will stop selling your personal information. It doesn't say how long processing takes.
- 4
Email privacy@meltwater.com if you want your data deleted, not just unsold
Owler's privacy policy says it will delete personal data at your request, sent to privacy@meltwater.com, unless the law or a legitimate business purpose requires it to keep the data. Expect it to ask you to identify yourself and name the data you mean.
Watch out for
- The form is an opt-out of sale. It doesn't say it deletes your record, so a deletion request is a separate email.
- Owler can decline requests that are repetitive or systematic, or that it calls impractical, such as data held in backup copies.
Does it come back?
Owler doesn't publish a relisting policy. Its form promises only that it stops selling your information once the request is processed.
Your rights
Owler's privacy policy, last updated April 24, 2023, gives California residents the right to request deletion and a list of what is held about them. People outside California can still send the request; Owler says it makes every effort to give access and delete on request.
California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.
California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.
Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
