How to opt out of GitHub, Inc.

  1. 1

    Decide what you want

GitHub's privacy contact route covers accessing, transferring, changing or deleting personal information. Deleting your whole account is a separate process in your account settings.

  2. 2

    Send the privacy request

Use the GitHub privacy contact form, or email privacy@github.com with an access, deletion, correction or opt-out request.

  3. 3

    Verify your identity if asked

GitHub's privacy statement says it may need to verify your identity before processing a request.

  4. 4

Use account deletion for the account

GitHub's Trust Center says you can delete your account by following the account deletion process in your user settings.

Watch out for

  • GitHub can refuse a deletion where it must keep data to meet legal obligations, detect fraud, investigate abuse or violations of its Terms of Service, or fix security issues.
  • The Private Information Removal process is for high-risk content such as exposed credentials. GitHub says privacy complaints go through the Privacy contact form instead.

Does it come back?

GitHub publishes no relisting policy. Content you posted publicly or that is mirrored elsewhere is not removed by a GitHub request alone.

Your rights

GitHub's privacy statement lists a right to request erasure of personal data that is no longer necessary for its purposes, for people in the EU and UK.

General information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked

Can I ask GitHub to delete my personal data?

Yes. Use the Privacy contact form or email privacy@github.com. GitHub may verify your identity, and deletion has legal and security exceptions.

Is GitHub a data broker?

No. It's a code hosting platform. The guide covers its privacy request route for people who want their data removed from it.

How is a privacy request different from a private information removal request?

The removal policy is for high-risk content such as exposed credentials. GitHub sends privacy complaints through the Privacy contact form.

How do I delete my GitHub account?

Follow the account deletion process in your user settings, per GitHub's Trust Center.
