How to opt out of Experian

  1. 1

    Pick a route

Experian's U.S. privacy notice lists four: the portal at consumerprivacy.experian.com, the phone line 1-833-210-4615, optout@experian.com, or PO Box 703, Allen, TX 75013.

  2. 2

Choose what to opt out of

Experian's page lets you opt out of the sale of your personal information, targeted advertising, and use of sensitive information.

  3. 3

    Stop prescreened offers separately

Experian points to 888-5-OPTOUT (888-567-8688) or OptOutPrescreen.com. One request covers all four bureaus' lists, per Experian.

  4. 4

Send a Global Privacy Control signal if your state recognizes it

The notice says in certain states a browser signal such as GPC counts as an opt-out.

Watch out for

  • The targeted advertising opt-out only stops ads that use Experian's marketing data, and Experian says to repeat it every 5 years for each internet-enabled device.
  • Opting out doesn't remove data from third parties Experian has already shared it with.
  • This doesn't touch your credit report or file.

What Experian holds about you

  • Current address
  • Phone numbers
  • Age and date of birth
  • Employment and education
  • Income and purchase data

What Experian is known to collect, not a check of your listing.

Does it come back?

Experian says its targeted advertising opt-out needs renewing every 5 years per device. It doesn't publish a re-listing rule for its other opt-outs.

Your rights

Experian is on the California data broker registry. In its filing it reports 794 deletion requests, all complied with, answered in 1 day on average.
