LexisNexis opt-out consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com

How to remove yourself from LexisNexis

LexisNexis takes opt-out requests at consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/request, by phone on 1-888-217-1591 or by mail. Its state pages say opt-outs are typically processed within two weeks. A partial opt-out keeps your professional data in play, so pick the full one.

How to opt out of LexisNexis

  1. 1

Open the request page for your state

Go to consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/request. LexisNexis also keeps state pages, for example California, Texas, Virginia and Connecticut, that point to the same request route.

  2. 2

    Pick the request type

LexisNexis offers a full opt-out, a partial opt-out and an opt-in. The partial option excludes data about your occupation or profession from the opt-out, so it leaves that data available for sale. Choose the full opt-out if you want the broadest request.

  3. 3

Give your name, address and date of birth

LexisNexis's Nevada notice says those three are needed. Your Social Security number or driver's license number and state are not required to submit an opt-out or opt-in request.

  4. 4

Or phone or mail it in

The phone line is 1-888-217-1591, the number in LexisNexis's California registry entry. LexisNexis says requests can also go by U.S. mail.

  5. 5

    Allow about two weeks

The Connecticut notice says opt-outs are typically processed within two weeks of receipt.

Watch out for

  • An opt-out covers the sale of your personal information. It does not apply to information that is exempt from state privacy laws.
  • The partial opt-out leaves occupation and profession data available, so the full opt-out is the one to choose if you want the broader request.
  • Website tracking is a separate setting: LexisNexis points to its Cookie Settings link or an opt-out preference signal, and says a signal applies only to that device or browser.
  • Public and elected officials, law enforcement officers, people facing a substantial risk of physical harm and identity theft victims can ask for suppression from restricted public records products. That is a different request from the opt-out.
  • Its California filing says it collects government ID numbers and precise geolocation and has sold data to government bodies, so an opt-out of sale is not the same as removing what it holds.

What LexisNexis holds about you

  • Full name and aliases
  • Current address
  • Age and date of birth
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Relatives
  • Court and criminal records
  • Vehicle records
  • Employment and education

What LexisNexis is known to collect, not a check of your listing.

Does it come back?

LexisNexis doesn't say whether data returns after an opt-out. The opt-out can be reversed with an opt-in request, so keep the confirmation. Re-check after a move or a new phone number.

Your rights

LexisNexis runs state privacy pages for California, Connecticut, Nevada, Texas, Virginia and Minnesota residents. In its California filing it reports 33,167 requests to opt out of sale or sharing in 2024, with 166 denied.

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.

United Kingdom: UK GDPR. You can ask any company to erase your personal data and to stop using it for direct marketing. It has one month to respond. If it doesn't, you can complain to the ICO.

Frequently asked

Is a full opt-out different from a partial one?

Yes. A partial opt-out leaves data about your occupation or profession out of the request, so LexisNexis can still sell it. A full opt-out covers all of it that falls under state privacy law.

Do I need to give my Social Security number?

Not for an opt-out. LexisNexis's Nevada notice says a Social Security number or driver's license number is not required, and asks for name, address and date of birth.

Can I undo an opt-out?

Yes. LexisNexis accepts an opt-in request if you later want your information to be sold again.

Can I get a copy of what LexisNexis holds on me?

LexisNexis publishes a report request form on its consumer disclosure site. Use it to see your file before you decide what to ask for.
