How to remove yourself from FourSquare

Also known as Foursquare Labs, Inc.

Foursquare's form at app.foursquare.com/data-requests handles opt-outs of sale and sharing, and it asks for your phone's Mobile Advertising Identifier. Its California filing reports a median of 8 days for those opt-outs and 10 for deletions in 2024.

How to opt out of FourSquare

  1. 1

    Find your Mobile Advertising Identifier

Foursquare can't process the form without it. On Android, open Google Settings, then Ads. The Advertising ID sits at the bottom of that screen. iOS is harder: you need a third-party app to find your IDFA, and Foursquare says it doesn't control those tools.

  2. 2

    Open the data requests form

Go to app.foursquare.com/data-requests. The form lets you opt out of the sale of your personal information, opt out of sharing, or limit use of sensitive data such as location.

  3. 3

Submit the request with your identifier

Choose the rights you want and paste in the advertising ID. Repeat on each phone or tablet if you use more than one, since the request is tied to one identifier.

  4. 4

Ask for deletion or a copy separately

The form is for opt-outs only. Requests to see, correct or delete your data go through Foursquare's Privacy Center, which the US State Consumer Privacy Notice links to, with instructions for authorized agents.

  5. 5

    Appeal if it's refused

Some states let you appeal. Foursquare's notice mentions the right but names no separate appeal address.

Watch out for

  • An advertising ID covers one device. If you reset the ID later, the new one isn't covered by the old opt-out.
  • Foursquare says its products can include personal data sold to enterprise customers and advertising partners. The opt-out stops that sale and sharing; it doesn't remove your Foursquare account.
  • Its Florida and Texas notices warn that it may sell sensitive personal data.

Does it come back?

Foursquare doesn't publish a relisting policy. Because the opt-out hangs on your device's advertising ID, redo the request after you reset the ID or change phones.

Your rights

Foursquare says it is a registered data broker in California and Vermont, plus Texas and Oregon. Its notice gives you the right to see, fix or delete your data across the 18 states it names, and to opt out of sale, of sharing, or of targeted ads.
