Step by step
- 1
Move the message to Junk
In the Mail app, swipe left on the spam message, tap More, then tap Move to Junk. Apple deletes messages in the Junk folder automatically after 30 days.
- 2
Block the sender
Open an email from them, tap the contact at the top, tap View Contact Card, then tap Block this Contact. Blocked email goes to the trash folder, and the block works across your Apple devices.
- 3
Check your blocked list
In Settings, open Privacy & Security, then Blocked Contacts (iOS 26). You can also unblock someone there.
- 4
Unsubscribe from marketing mail
Under the US CAN-SPAM Act, marketing emails must include an unsubscribe option, and the sender must honor it within 10 business days. Use the link on mail from companies you recognize.
- 5
Report phishing, don't click
Don't click links in unexpected messages. Forward phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org and report them at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, then delete the message.
Watch out for
- Don't use the unsubscribe link in mail from senders you don't know. The FTC advises getting fewer unwanted emails to avoid clicking links that can lead to phishing.
- Blocking one address does nothing about the next one. Spammers send from many addresses.
- Apple's filtering can catch legitimate mail, so check Junk now and then.
- The FTC says it can't resolve reports for individual people. Reports feed investigations.
Other ways to do it
- 1
If a real email lands in Junk
Move it back to the Inbox. Future mail from that sender then goes to the Inbox instead of Junk.
What stays out there
Blocking and reporting spam stops it landing in one inbox. That stops new data at that one company. It doesn't touch copies that data brokers, people-search sites and old search results already hold, such as a public email address that marketers and people-search sites already collected.
Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. It doesn't close accounts or change settings for you, so do the steps above yourself first. You can start with a free scan at https://www.serus.ai/.
