How to opt out of LocateFamily.com
- 1
Find your entry number
Each listing on LocateFamily shows an entry number at the left of the name. Write down the number for every entry that is yours.
- 2
Open the removal form
Go to locatefamily.com/removal.html and enter the entry number. For several entries on the same page, separate the numbers with commas. Entries on different pages need a separate form each.
- 3
Use a real email address
LocateFamily rejects requests with an invalid email address, disposable email services, and addresses that use a "+" filter.
- 4
Watch for the confirmation
The site says you get a confirmation message within a few hours. If your request later appears on its list of rejected requests, you can submit a new one.
- 5
Keep the email working
LocateFamily says removals are applied at update time, and if your email bounces then, the request is treated as invalid.
Watch out for
- Disposable and "+" email addresses are rejected, and the request fails without a valid address.
- If the email bounces when LocateFamily applies the removal, the information may be displayed again.
- Requests sent to the site's legal department are ignored. Use the removal form.
- The rejected-requests list only covers the last 6 months.

Does it come back?
LocateFamily says a removal request is saved permanently, but information may be displayed again after a database update because of technical issues, or if your email bounces at update time. Check your name every few months.
Your rights
LocateFamily lists people outside the US too. It says people in law enforcement and similar roles can ask for removal for safety reasons and must identify their employing agency.
California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.
California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.
Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
Canada: PIPEDA. You can withdraw your consent to a company using your personal information and ask it to correct what it holds. If it doesn't respond, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
United Kingdom: UK GDPR. You can ask any company to erase your personal data and to stop using it for direct marketing. It has one month to respond. If it doesn't, you can complain to the ICO.
European Union: GDPR. You have the right to have your personal data erased and to object to its use for direct marketing. Companies must respond within one month, and you can complain to your national data protection authority if they don't.
