How to opt out of Apartments.com

  1. 1

    Turn on Global Privacy Control

The notice says CoStar honors GPC signals as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. It does not respond to Do Not Track.

  2. 2

    Open the Global Privacy Notice

Go to apartments.com/grow/about/privacy-notice, or the CoStar notice at the do-not-sell address.

  3. 3

    Use the Contact Us section

To opt out, the notice says to contact CoStar by the methods in its Contact Us section.

  4. 4

    Say what you want

State that you want to opt out of the sale or sharing of your information. The notice also lists rights to access, delete, object to or restrict certain processing.

Watch out for

  • The opt-out page is the general Global Privacy Notice, not a separate form.
  • CoStar says some data it exchanges through partnerships may count as a sale under US law, and that it uses data for targeted advertising.
  • Apartments.com holds listings and rental application data, so it behaves differently from a people-search site.

Does it come back?

CoStar doesn't publish a relisting policy.

Your rights

CoStar's notice lists access, deletion, and rights to object to or restrict certain processing, and honors GPC for opt-outs.

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
