How to opt out of Public Record Reports

  1. 1

    Open the privacy requests page

Go to the privacy requests page in the Public Record Reports help center and find the Do Not Sell My Info / opt-out form.

  2. 2

Search for yourself and pick the record

Use the search to find your record, then select the one you want removed. If you appear under a second spelling or an old address, you'll likely need to repeat the process for each.

  3. 3

    Click the verification link

The company emails a link to confirm the request. It says to check your filtered messages, and to look for typos in the address if nothing arrives within 15 minutes.

  4. 4

    Wait for the confirmation email

A second email says the opt-out was processed. Public Record Reports says the record is gone the next time its database updates, usually within 24 hours.

  5. 5

    Search again the next day

Clear your browser cache first, since an old page can linger. If the record is still there, call 1-800-326-2283.

Watch out for

  • A request for deletion of account data (as opposed to the people-search opt-out) asks you to reply to a confirmation email, and if no record matches the name and email you gave, you get a message saying so.
  • Different spellings, initials or addresses can come back as new records from data partners, and each needs its own removal.

Sister sites

These are run by the same company. Removing yourself from Public Record Reports doesn't remove you from them, so check each one.

Does it come back?

It can. Public Record Reports says it updates its search results from public sources regularly, and new data that differs enough from the removed record (a different spelling, initials or an address) can appear as a fresh listing. Repeat the removal if that happens.

Your rights

Public Record Reports is on the California data broker registry. Judges, prosecutors, law enforcement and their household members covered by Daniel's Law can contact the company for help instead of using the automated opt-out.

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.

Frequently asked

Do I need a membership to be removed from Public Record Reports?

No. The company says you don't have to be a member, and removal doesn't cost anything.

Can someone else submit the request for me?

Yes, an authorized agent can, but must send a letter signed by you or a valid power of attorney along with the form.

Does the opt-out cover SpyFly too?

The California registry lists spyfly.com and publicrecordreports.com under one operator, but the help-center page doesn't say one request covers both. Check SpyFly separately.
