Step by step

  1. 1

Download what you want to keep

Deleting removes your emails, files, calendars and photos. Download them first.

  2. 2

Update services that use your Gmail address

Change the email on banking, social and other accounts that sign in with it, and check your recovery email and phone.

  3. 3

    Open Data & privacy

Sign in to your Google Account and open Data & privacy.

  4. 4

    Find the delete option

Scroll to Your data & privacy options, select More options, then Delete your Google Account.

  5. 5

    Follow the prompts

Confirm what will be deleted and complete the steps Google shows.

Watch out for

  • You lose access to Google services tied to that sign-in, and purchases on YouTube and Google Play.
  • Google says you can delete the account at any time, but recovering it may not be possible after a certain period.
  • If you have more than one Google Account, deleting one doesn't remove the others.
  • Removing an account from a phone or browser doesn't delete it. It only signs it out of that device.
  • If your account belongs to a work or school organization, your administrator controls it.

Other ways to do it

  1. 1

    Delete only Gmail

You can remove the Gmail service and keep the rest of the Google Account, if the account has another email address that isn't Gmail. Google explains this on its page about deleting your Gmail service.

What stays out there

Deleting the account stops new data going to Google. It doesn't reach copies that other companies already hold: data brokers and people-search sites often scrape public profiles, and old search results can keep showing a cached page or a username for a while.

If your name, photos or handle were public before you deleted, check where else they show up. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, but it doesn't delete or change your Google account itself. That part stays with you, and the steps above cover it.

Frequently asked

Does deleting a Google Account delete Gmail?

Yes. The emails, files, calendars and photos in the account are removed with it.

Can I delete my Google Account but keep Gmail?

No. Deleting the account removes Gmail with it. To drop Gmail and keep the account instead, use Google's option to delete only the Gmail service.

Does removing an account from my phone delete it?

No. That only removes it from the device, and the Google Account stays.

Can I get a deleted Google Account back?

Google says recovery may not be possible after a certain period, so download what you need before you start.
