Serus is a privacy company with paid tools to find and remove your personal data. This guide shows the free way to do it yourself.

Square closes accounts by deactivation. In the Dashboard, go to Settings > Account & Settings > Business information > About and choose Deactivate your business. Square asks for a reason, your password and a code. Closed accounts can't be reactivated.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Export the data you need

Before you close the account, export your payment history and your Item Library. Export the Customer Directory too if you want to keep it.

  2. 2

    Cancel active subscriptions

Cancel any subscriptions linked to the account first.

  3. 3

    Open Business information

Sign in to the Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & Settings > Business information > About.

  4. 4

    Select Deactivate your business

    Choose Deactivate your business.

  5. 5

    Complete the checks

Square asks for a reason and your password, then sends a verification code. Finish those to deactivate.

Watch out for

  • Square says there's no cost to keeping an account open, so closing it only matters if you want your business details gone.
  • A closed Square account can't be reactivated. To use Square again you create a new account.
  • Active subscriptions linked to the account have to be cancelled first.
  • Square Checking is closed separately: in the Dashboard or POS app go to **Banking > Checking**, choose **Get help with Checking**, then **I'd like to close my account**.
  • Menu names can differ by country and app version, so use the help article for your region.

What stays out there

Deactivating your Square account stops Square from running your business profile. Receipts and customer details that Square or a payment partner already holds stay with them. An old business listing can also linger in search results or on people-search sites.

Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, so the copies that outlive the account don't stay out there.

Frequently asked

Do I have to pay to close my Square account?

No. Square says there's no cost to keep an account open, and it doesn't describe a fee for closing it.

How do I close Square Checking?

In the Dashboard or POS app go to Banking > Checking, choose Get help with Checking, then I'd like to close my account.
