Step by step

  1. 1

    Pick deactivate or permanent deletion

Zillow offers both. Deactivating is reversible and takes effect right away, but you lose tools such as online rental applications and mortgage applications. Permanent deletion can't be reversed.

  2. 2

To deactivate, use your account settings

Zillow's terms say you can deactivate at any time by selecting "deactivate account" in your account settings.

  3. 3

To delete, go to the Zillow Group Privacy Portal

Open privacy.zillowgroup.com and choose the option to permanently delete your data.

  4. 4

    Verify your email and confirm

The portal asks you to verify your email and confirm the request. Zillow keeps a record of the request.

  5. 5

    Delete your uploads yourself

Zillow says photos, videos and 3D home tours you uploaded can only be deleted by you, so remove them before you finish.

Watch out for

  • Deletion can't be reversed, and Zillow says processing can take up to 45 days.
  • You can't open a new account with the same email address for 90 days.
  • Copies held by other users, such as a real estate agent using Follow Up Boss, stay with them. You contact those users separately.
  • Zillow's terms say you remain responsible for any fees incurred before you end your account.
  • Employment-related information goes through HR or privacy@zillow.com, not the portal.

What stays out there

Closing an account stops Zillow from holding new data about you. It doesn't reach copies that other companies already hold: people-search sites, data brokers and old search results can keep what they gathered earlier, including a public profile they scraped.

Home data is the big one here. Property records, past addresses and sale history sit on real-estate and people-search sites that don't answer to Zillow, and deleting your account doesn't change a public record.

Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, and keeps watching for relistings. Run a free scan to see what's out there.
