How to delete your Twitter (X) account

Twitter is now X. Open the menu, go to Settings and privacy, then Your account, then Deactivate your account. Confirm with your password. If you don't log in for 30 days, the account is deleted. Logging in earlier reactivates it.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open the navigation menu

In the X app, open the navigation menu.

  2. 2

    Go to Settings and privacy

Select Settings and privacy, then Your account.

  3. 3

    Select Deactivate your account

Read the information on the screen and choose to deactivate.

  4. 4

    Enter your password

Confirm with your password and tap through the final confirmation.

  5. 5

Stay logged out for 30 days

Deactivation lasts 30 days. If you don't log in during that time, the account is deleted.

Watch out for

  • Logging in during the 30 days reactivates the account, so sign out everywhere and don't open the app.
  • Deactivating doesn't cancel subscriptions bought through the app, such as X Premium. Cancel those where you bought them. Subscriptions bought on x.com are cancelled automatically.
  • If you can't reach the account's email or verified phone number, X says it can't deactivate the account for you.
  • If the account keeps reactivating without you logging in, change your password and review connected apps before you deactivate again.

What stays out there

Deleting the account stops new data going to X. It doesn't reach copies that other companies already hold: data brokers and people-search sites often scrape public profiles, and old search results can keep showing a cached page or a username for a while.

If your name, photos or handle were public before you deleted, check where else they show up. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, but it doesn't delete or change your X account itself. That part stays with you, and the steps above cover it.

Frequently asked

Is deactivating a Twitter account the same as deleting it?

On X it's the first step. The account is deleted if you don't log in during the 30 day deactivation period.

Can I delete my Twitter account from the app?

Yes. Use Settings and privacy, then Your account, then Deactivate your account.

Will my X Premium subscription stop?

Not if you bought it through an app store. Cancel it there. Subscriptions bought on x.com are cancelled automatically.

What if I can't access my email or phone?

X says it can't deactivate the account for you if you can't reach the email or verified phone number on it.
