Step by step

  1. 1

    Open the Privacy settings

In the Venmo app, go to the Me tab and tap the Settings gear at the top right. Then tap Privacy.

  2. 2

    Set the default to Private

Choose between Public, Friends or Private. Private means your future payments are visible only to you and the other person in the payment.

  3. 3

    Change a single payment

You can set privacy on one payment when you send it, or afterwards by tapping its current privacy label.

  4. 4

    Hide your past payments

The Privacy menu under Settings has an option for hiding all your past transactions at once. Past payments can only be made more private than they were, never less.

Watch out for

  • The more restrictive setting wins. If you mark a payment Public but the other person's default is Private, the payment stays private.
  • A private payment is still visible to the other person. Everyone in a payment can always see the amount, note, names and timestamp.
  • Card purchases are private by default. If you choose to share one, Venmo keeps the amount private.
  • Changes to your default don't rewrite old payments. Use the hide option for those.

What stays out there

Venmo privacy settings control what other Venmo users see in feeds. They don't change what the other person in a payment knows, and they don't touch copies already held elsewhere. A public username, name or profile photo can be scraped by people-search sites, and payment notes can include details you wouldn't want attached to your name.

Check what a search for your name and username turns up after you change the settings. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them: see how Serus protects you.

Frequently asked

Can people still see my Venmo payments if I set them to private?

Only the people in the payment. Everyone involved can see the amount, note, names of sender and recipient, and the timestamp.

How do I make old Venmo transactions private?

Use the option in the Privacy menu under Settings that hides all past transactions. You can also tighten individual payments by tapping their privacy label.

Can I make a Venmo payment more public after sending it?

No. Venmo says past payments can only be made more private than they were initially.

Are Venmo card purchases private?

Yes by default. You can share one individually, and Venmo says it keeps the purchase amount private even then.
