Serus is a privacy company with paid tools to find and remove your personal data. This guide shows the free way to do it yourself.
Step by step
- 1
Sign in to your ID.me Wallet
Go to the ID.me sign-in page, enter the email address on the account you want to close, then enter your password. If you have trouble signing in, ID.me has an "I can't sign in to my ID.me Wallet" help article.
- 2
Open Sign In & Security
In the top menu, select Sign In & Security, then select Privacy.
- 3
Choose Remove my data
Under "Manage my data", select Remove my data.
- 4
Select Close my wallet
Select Close my wallet, then pick a reason for closing it from the list.
- 5
Confirm
Select Yes, close my wallet. That closes the account.
Watch out for
- If you have more than one wallet, close the duplicate and not your verified wallet. ID.me defines the verified wallet as the one you used in the past to verify your identity.
- After you close a wallet, you have to wait 7 days before you can add that wallet's email address to a different ID.me wallet.
- Deleting your ID.me account doesn't delete anything in your VA records. You just can't use that account to sign in to VA.gov or other sites anymore, so set up another sign-in option first (Login.gov and CLEAR are the others the VA lists).
- Any site that lets you sign in with ID.me will need a different login once the account is gone.

What stays out there
Closing your ID.me Wallet stops that one company from holding an active account for you. It doesn't reach records that other organizations already have, such as your VA records, or copies of your details that data brokers and people-search sites collected from other sources.
If your name, address or phone number is listed on people-search sites, closing an account elsewhere won't change that. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them.
