Serus is a privacy company with paid tools to find and remove your personal data. This guide shows the free way to do it yourself.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Back up what you need

Deletion can't be reversed. Export or forward the email, files and passwords you want to keep first.

  2. 2

    Sign in on the web

Go to account.proton.me and sign in. Proton says deletion is done in the web app, not the mobile app.

  3. 3

    Open your account settings

Go to Settings > All settings > Account and password.

  4. 4

    Find Delete account

Scroll to the Delete account section and start the deletion.

  5. 5

Give a reason and confirm the warning

Pick a reason and confirm you understand the account can't be recovered.

  6. 6

    Re-enter your password

Enter your password, plus a 2FA code if you have two-factor authentication on, to finish.

Watch out for

  • Deleting the account removes access to every Proton service on it, including Mail, Calendar, VPN, Pass and Drive.
  • There's no way to recover a deleted Proton Account.
  • Your username can't be reused by anyone else, or by you for a new account.
  • If you only want to combine accounts and keep the data, Proton suggests merging with another account instead.

What stays out there

Closing an account stops new data piling up at Proton. It doesn't reach copies that data brokers, people-search sites and old search results already hold, such as a public profile or an email address that was scraped or sold on.

Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. See the data broker opt-out guides for the sites that matter most where you live.
