Serus is a privacy company with paid tools to find and remove your personal data. This guide shows the free way to do it yourself.

Step by step

  1. 1

Decide whether to keep a copy of your data

Bluesky's help center says your data lives in a content-addressed archive. Developers can export a copy of their repository. For everyone else, Bluesky says the tooling is still being built.

  2. 2

Delete posts you want gone first

Bluesky says a deleted post disappears from the app immediately and its images are deleted right away. The text is cleared from storage later in periodic back-end deletes.

  3. 3

Open your settings and choose the account deletion option

Bluesky's Terms of Service say you may terminate your account at any time by using the account deletion option in your settings. The exact menu labels can differ by app version.

  4. 4

    Confirm the deletion

Follow the prompts to confirm. Deleting is the step that ends the account, so only confirm once you've saved anything you want.

Watch out for

  • Bluesky is a public network. Posts, likes and blocks are public, and there are no private profiles.
  • Bluesky says it notifies other services and apps on the AT Protocol when you delete, but it can't force them to remove your content. Complete deletion across the network may not be possible.
  • Bluesky keeps some personal data after deletion for trust and safety, legal compliance and other legitimate purposes, as its Privacy Policy describes.
  • Mutes are private, but mute lists are public.

What stays out there

Deleting your Bluesky account stops new activity there, but public posts were readable by anyone, so other services may already hold copies. People-search sites and old search results can also keep a public profile or username long after the account is gone. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. You can run a free scan to see what's out there.
