Serus is a privacy company with paid tools to find and remove your personal data. This guide shows the free way to do it yourself.
Step by step
- 1
Export what you want to keep
Open a conversation, click the three dots in the top corner and choose Export. Pick a format such as TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. Basic plan accounts can only export TXT.
- 2
Cancel your subscription
Otter says canceling a subscription does not delete the account, and it asks you to cancel before you delete. Subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play have to be canceled there.
- 3
Turn off Notetaker and disconnect your calendar
Otter lists turning off Notetaker auto-join and disconnecting your calendar as steps to do before deleting.
- 4
Open Account Settings > General
Use a browser. Otter says the mobile app has the same option but it can fail, and then recommends the web.
- 5
Choose Delete account
Scroll to the bottom of General and choose Delete account. Verify with your password or the sign-in provider you used, then confirm.
Watch out for
- Deletion is permanent. Otter says it can't recover deleted accounts or conversations, and conversations you shared with others become inaccessible to them.
- Uninstalling the app doesn't delete the account, and canceling a subscription doesn't either.
- If you don't see Delete account, you may belong to a workspace with two or more members. A workspace owner has to remove or delete the other members first, and a regular member has to ask their admin.
- Otter keeps some contact details, such as your email, after deletion for accounting and administrative purposes.

What stays out there
Deleting your Otter account removes your transcripts from Otter's service. It doesn't remove anything that other companies hold, such as your name and email in marketing databases or people-search listings.
Meeting recordings you shared before deleting may also sit in other people's inboxes and tools, which you can't clear from your side. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them.

No. Otter says canceling a subscription doesn't delete the account. You have to delete the account separately in Account Settings.
Why is there no Delete account option for me?

Can I recover my Otter conversations after deleting?
Otter says it can't recover deleted accounts or conversations. Export what you need before you delete.
