Step by step
- 1
Download your data first
Closing is permanent. If you want a copy of your information, use Request your data on Amazon's data management page before you close anything.
- 2
Open the closure request page
Search Amazon's help for "Request the Closure of Your Account and the Deletion of Your Personal Information" and open the page. It's the one that handles both closing the account and deleting your personal information.
- 3
Sign in and review what's linked
Sign in to the account you want to close. Amazon shows the products and services tied to it. Read the list before you go on.
- 4
Pick a reason and confirm
Choose a reason, then confirm that you want the account closed.
- 5
Answer the verification message
Amazon sends a confirmation to the email address on the account or by text. You have 5 days to reply and verify the request. If you miss that window, the request doesn't go through.
Watch out for
- Closing is final. Amazon says a closed account can't be restored.
- The request also closes your account on amazon.fr, amazon.com.mx and every other Amazon site that uses the same login.
- Amazon says it is legally required to keep some data, such as order history, for tax, accounting and fraud prevention.
- Seller, Brand Registry and Advertising accounts go with it. Sort out anything you still need from them first.
Other ways to do it
- 1
If you have a business account
Seller, Brand Registry and Advertising accounts are lost along with the personal account. Amazon says to use the same closure request to delete a personal account after you close the business one.
What stays out there
Closing your Amazon account removes it from Amazon. That stops new data at that one company. It doesn't touch copies that data brokers, people-search sites and old search results already hold, such as old order-linked addresses on people-search sites and a phone number in caller-ID databases.
Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. It doesn't close accounts or change settings for you, so do the steps above yourself first. You can start with a free scan at https://www.serus.ai/.
