Step by step

  1. 1

    Download your data

Closing removes access to your emails and other content. Save anything you need first.

  2. 2

Pay any balance and cancel subscriptions

An account with an unpaid balance can't be closed. Pay it on the MyAccount page and cancel every subscription and paid plan. AOL's help center says you can close the account 90 days after that.

  3. 3

    Close extra usernames first

A primary username can't be closed while sub-usernames are open. Close the additional ones first, then the primary one after a 30-day wait.

  4. 4

    Open the account termination page

Follow the "Close your account" article in the AOL Help center and sign in to the termination page.

  5. 5

    Confirm the closure

Read the information, confirm your username, re-enter your password and confirm.

Watch out for

  • The email address can't be reused by you or anyone else.
  • Sign-ins and password resets tied to that address on other sites will stop working.
  • Once the recovery window ends, closing is permanent.
  • If you can't close the account yourself, AOL lists paid premium support at 1-800-358-4860.

What stays out there

Closing your AOL account stops new data from piling up at that one company. It doesn't reach copies that people-search sites and data brokers already hold, or old search results that point to them. An AOL email address that appeared in a breach or on a mailing list can stay in those copies after the account is gone.

Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. You can also see the manual route in our data broker opt-out guides.

Frequently asked

Can I reuse my AOL email address after closing?

No. AOL says the address can't be reused by you or anyone else.

Why can't I close my AOL account?

An unpaid balance, active subscriptions or open sub-usernames can block it. Clear those first.

Can I reactivate a closed AOL account?

AOL has a reactivation article, but once the recovery window ends, closing is permanent.
