Watch out for

  • Search engines are slow. LinkedIn says it can take several weeks or months for Google, Yahoo or Bing to notice the change, and it doesn't control that refresh.
  • Your profile photo has its own visibility setting, separate from the public profile toggles.
  • LinkedIn has another setting for visibility off LinkedIn. Changing it doesn't limit your public profile, which the public profile setting controls.

What stays out there

Turning off your public profile stops LinkedIn from showing it to people who aren't signed in. It doesn't touch copies elsewhere. People-search sites and data brokers can hold details they scraped earlier, such as your name, employer and city, and old search results can linger until they refresh.

Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them.
