Step by step
- 1
Choose deactivate or delete
craigslist has two routes. Account settings include a deactivate your account option. The "Download or delete your data/account" page is the route for removing your data.
- 2
To deactivate, log in and open account settings
After you log in, open your account settings. The page lets you change your email, password and default homepage, view your forum handles and active sessions, and deactivate your account.
- 3
To delete, open the data and account page
Go to craigslist.org/about/ccpa, titled "Download or delete your data/account". It has a "Delete my data/account" link.
- 4
Verify who you are
Before it processes the request, craigslist confirms your identity. That means logging into your existing account, or giving other information such as a government-issued ID if you can't.
Watch out for
- Deactivating isn't the same as deleting. If you want your data removed, use the data and account page.
- craigslist checks your identity before deleting, so have access to the email or account involved.
- Posts made without an account are managed through the email craigslist sent you, not through account settings.
- craigslist's privacy policy lists a deletion right that is subject to certain exceptions.
Other ways to do it
- 1
Remove posts only
If you posted while logged in, you can delete posts from your account homepage. For posts made without an account, use the POST/EDIT/DELETE email you received, or choose a password for your email address at accounts.craigslist.org/reset to see them in an account.
What stays out there
Closing an account stops craigslist from holding new data about you. It doesn't reach copies that other companies already hold: people-search sites, data brokers and old search results can keep what they gathered earlier, including a public profile they scraped.
For craigslist the usual leftovers are phone numbers and names from old ads that were scraped, and cached copies of listings in search results.
Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, and keeps watching for relistings. Run a free scan to see what's out there.
