Watch out for

  • Closing your account is permanent. You unlink all your services and lose access to your messages in your myGov Inbox.
  • If you want to use myGov again later, you have to create a new myGov account.
  • If you created your account with Digital ID, disconnecting your Digital ID closes your myGov account.
  • myGov can also close accounts itself, for example if you haven't signed in for 6 months since creating the account and never linked a service, or haven't signed in for 24 months.
  • If you think someone else has accessed your account and you can't secure it or reach the helpdesk, myGov describes closing the account as an option.

What stays out there

Closing myGov ends your myGov login. It doesn't erase what the agencies behind your linked services hold, and it has no effect on your details on commercial sites.

Identity data tied to government services, such as your name, date of birth and address, is also what data brokers and people-search sites collect from other sources. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. It doesn't close government accounts.

Frequently asked

Can I delete my myGov account completely?

myGov's help pages describe closing the account, not a separate delete option. Closing is permanent.

What happens to my linked services when I close myGov?

They're unlinked from your myGov account. You'd need to link them again to a new myGov account.

Yes. The myGov app lets you close your account from the account details section.

Will myGov close my account if I don't use it?

It can. myGov may close an account with no linked services after 6 months without signing in, or any account after 24 months without signing in.
