Step by step
- 1
Open Privacy Controls
On the Strava website, go to Settings, then Privacy Controls. In the app, open Settings from the cog icon and pick Privacy Controls.
- 2
Set your profile page to Followers
Change the profile page setting from Everyone to Followers. Strava says a Followers-level profile also keeps your profile out of search engine results.
- 3
Set who sees your activities
Choose Followers or Only You as the default for future uploads. The setting decides who can open an activity's details page; the levels are Everyone, Followers and Only You.
- 4
Change a single activity
To override the default on one activity, open it and use the edit screen. On the web, click the pencil icon and pick a setting under Privacy Controls.
- 5
Fix your past activities
Go to Settings > Privacy Controls > Edit Past Activities to change older activities in bulk.
- 6
Hide start and end points and other details
Map visibility and hidden details are separate settings. Under Settings > Privacy Controls > Hidden Details you can hide items such as heart rate, power and start time, and you can set map visibility to hide the start and end of your routes near a chosen address.
Watch out for
- Only activities set to Everyone count on public segment leaderboards, and some challenges need Everyone too. Moving an activity to Followers or Only You removes its segment achievements.
- Both the activity and your profile page must be set to Everyone for a logged-out visitor to see the activity, so setting the profile to Followers closes that path.
- Your first and last name, bio and follower counts stay visible to all members whatever you choose.
- Map visibility applies regardless of your activity setting, so check it separately if your route starts at home.
What stays out there
Making Strava private limits what other Strava members and search engines see on Strava. It doesn't affect where else your name and address appear, such as on people-search sites that gather public records.
If your start and end points sat near your home for a while, the safest assumption is that someone could have noted your street already. Serus finds where your address and other details are listed and removes them, which is a different job from the privacy controls above.
Frequently asked
Does making my profile private hide my activities?
They're set separately. Strava says both the profile page and the activity need to be Everyone for a logged-out person to see the activity, so set both.
What does Only You mean on Strava?
Only You is the strictest activity setting. Even your followers can't open the activity details page.
Will private activities count on leaderboards?
No. Only activities set to Everyone qualify for public segment leaderboards.
Can I hide where my runs start?
Yes. Strava has map visibility settings that hide the start and end of your routes near an address you choose.
