How to close your Chase account
Bring the account balance to zero, make sure nothing is pending or on hold, then ask Chase to close it by calling Personal Banking Customer Service at 1-800-935-9935 or by sending a secure message in the app or on Chase.com with the last 4 digits of the account and your reason.

Step by step
- 1
Bring the balance to zero
Chase generally needs the account at a zero balance before it can complete a closure request. Move or withdraw what's left, and leave enough time for deposits you're waiting on to clear.
- 2
Clear pending items and holds
Under the Chase deposit account agreement, Chase may decline to close an account that has pending transactions, is overdrawn, is subject to legal process or has a hold on it. Let pending items post and pay off any overdraft first.
- 3
Point automatic payments and deposits elsewhere
Switch paychecks, bill pay and subscriptions to another account before you close this one, so nothing bounces after the account is gone.
- 4
Ask Chase to close it
Call Personal Banking Customer Service at 1-800-935-9935, or send a secure message from the Chase app or Chase.com. In a secure message, include the last 4 digits of the account and your reason for closing it.
Watch out for
- Fees left on a closed account can be sent to collections and hurt your credit score, so settle them before you close.
- Chase says closing a checking account typically doesn't directly affect your credit score.
- Chase may close an account on its own if its balance is zero or negative, so a forgotten empty account can disappear without you asking.
- Pending transactions, an overdraft, legal process or a hold can stop the closure until they're resolved.

Credit cards
Chase publishes a separate article on cancelling a credit card: https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/education/basics/how-to-cancel-a-credit-card. Closing a card isn't the same process as closing a deposit account.
What stays out there
Closing the account stops Chase from serving you as a customer going forward. It doesn't touch what other companies already hold about you. Your name, past addresses and phone number can sit on people-search sites and with data brokers regardless of which bank you use.
Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. It doesn't close bank accounts for you.
Frequently asked
Do I need to call Chase to close my account?
Chase lists two routes: phone, at 1-800-935-9935, or a secure message in the app or on Chase.com. A secure message should include the last 4 digits of the account and your reason.
Will closing my Chase account hurt my credit score?
Chase says closing a checking account typically doesn't directly affect your credit score. Unpaid fees on a closed account can go to collections, and that can.
Can Chase refuse to close my account?
Under the deposit account agreement, Chase may decline when the account has pending transactions, is overdrawn, is subject to legal process or has a hold on it.
