Watch out for

  • Deletion is permanent. Substack can't restore the account afterwards.
  • Self-deletion removes your data and cancels your subscriptions.
  • Deleting the Substack app doesn't close your account. You have to delete the account itself.
  • Publication owners with paid subscribers have to turn off paid subscriptions and disconnect Stripe first, and no refunds are issued automatically.

Other ways to do it

  1. 1

    If you run a publication

Publication owners use a different route through the publication's settings. If you have paid subscribers, Substack says you first turn off paid subscriptions and disconnect your Stripe account, then delete the publication. Self-deletion doesn't automatically issue refunds. For help disconnecting Stripe, use the support widget on Substack's help center to reach a human specialist.

What stays out there

Deleting your Substack account stops new data collection there. It doesn't remove old posts cached by search engines, copies that other sites scraped, or your name and email on lists held by data brokers.

If you wrote under your real name, search for it afterwards to see what remains. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them, and keeps watching for new listings.
