How to make your Reddit account private
Open your Reddit profile settings, go to Curate your profile, and hide your content and activity, NSFW posts and follower count. Then turn off Allow people to follow you in your privacy settings. Hidden posts stay visible in the communities where you made them.

Step by step
- 1
Open your profile settings
On the web, go to the Profile section in your Settings. In the mobile app, open your profile page and select Edit.
- 2
Go to Curate your profile
Scroll down to the Curate your profile section. In the mobile app, tap your avatar to open your profile, select the hamburger menu (three lines) near the top right corner and tap Profile curation.
- 3
Hide your content and activity
Under Content and activity, choose which subreddits' content shows on your profile. You can show all or hide all. The Active In section updates to match.
- 4
Hide NSFW posts and your follower count
In the same section you can show or hide all NSFW posts and comments, and show or hide your follower count.
- 5
Turn off followers
On reddit.com, open your Privacy Settings and, under Social interactions, toggle off Allow people to follow you. On iOS and Android, tap your avatar, open the hamburger menu, select Settings, tap your username under Account Settings and toggle off Allow people to follow you under Safety.
Watch out for
- Hiding content only changes your profile. Your posts and comments stay visible in the communities where you made them, and in search results on and off Reddit.
- After you post, comment, edit, send mod mail, ask to become an approved user or join a private community, that community's mods can see your full profile history for 28 days, whatever your settings say. Interacting again resets the 28 days.
- The same 28-day rule applies when you comment on another user's profile: that user can see your full history.
- Turning off followers means people who followed you stop seeing your posts in their home feed (hiding can take an hour), and you can't view the follower list you had before.
- Settings changes apply on all platforms, including old Reddit.
What stays out there
Changing these settings only affects what Reddit shows on your profile. Posts and comments remain in their communities and in search results, and any copy someone already saved or scraped is out of Reddit's hands.
A username that shows up on other sites, or a name and city that you've posted, can end up on people-search sites and data broker profiles. Those listings sit with the sites that hold them, not with Reddit. Serus finds where your details are listed and removes them. For the manual route, see our data broker opt-out guides.
Frequently asked
Can you make a Reddit account fully private?
Reddit's help pages describe profile curation and follower settings, not a single private-account switch. You can hide content and activity on your profile, but posts stay visible in the communities where you made them.
Can people still find my posts after I hide my profile content?
Yes. Reddit says hidden posts and comments are still available in the original community and in search results both on and off the platform.
Who can see my hidden history?
Mods of a community can see your full profile content for 28 days after you interact with it. A user whose profile you comment on gets the same 28 days.
How do I stop people following me on Reddit?
Toggle off Allow people to follow you: under Social interactions in your Privacy Settings on reddit.com, or under Safety in your account settings in the app.
