What is a social media handle?

In Merriam-Webster, a handle is a name or nickname. On social media the word took on that meaning for the short, unique name that goes after the @ sign. If your handle is @sam_walks, people can find your profile, tag you in posts and send you messages by typing it.
A handle is not always the same as your display name. Your display name is what shows at the top of your profile and can be your real name, a nickname or anything else, and it usually doesn't have to be unique. Your handle is the unique one, and platforms generally won't let two accounts share it.
Why your handle matters for privacy
People tend to reuse the same handle on many sites: gaming, forums, dating apps, shopping, social media. That makes it easy to link accounts to one person. Someone who knows your handle can search for it elsewhere and build a picture from the results: photos, interests, places you've been, sometimes your real name.
This is a routine step in online investigations (often called OSINT) and in doxxing. A handle that includes your real name, birth year or home town gives away even more.
A concrete example
Someone uses the handle "jenmiller87" on Instagram and the same name on a running app and a local forum. A stranger searches that name, finds the running app's public routes near a home address, and the forum post that mentions the employer. None of it is secret, but together it says a lot.
Handle vs. related terms
- Username is often used as a synonym. Some platforms use it for the login name, which may differ from the public handle.
- Display name is the changeable label shown on your profile.
- Profile URL is the web address of your page, which often contains the handle.
How to protect yourself
- 1
Use a different handle for different areas of life
Keep a personal handle, a public or professional one, and a throwaway for forums and games, so one search doesn't connect them.
- 2
Leave your real details out of it
Skip your full name, birth year, workplace and town in the handle itself.
- 3
Search for your own handle
Look it up on a search engine and on a few other platforms to see what a stranger would find, then tighten privacy settings or delete accounts you no longer use.
- 4
Check what's linked to your name
Serus finds where your address and phone number are listed online and removes them, so a handle can't be matched to a home address as easily.

Frequently asked
Is a handle the same as a username?
Often, yes. On some platforms the username is the login name and the handle is the public @name, and they can differ, so check how the platform you use describes them.
Can I change my social media handle?
Most platforms let you change it in account or profile settings, sometimes with limits on how often. Old links to your profile may stop working when you do.
Why does a handle start with @?
The @ sign is how platforms let people mention or tag an account. Typing @ followed by a handle points to that profile.
