Apple uses "unknown callers" for calls from phone numbers that aren't saved in your contacts. The number may show on screen, and it may belong to your dentist or a delivery driver. It simply isn't one your iPhone knows.

That is different from a call that shows no number at all. Apple's guide covers unsaved numbers and doesn't explain missing caller ID, so if your screen shows no number, treat it as a call you can't identify.

What iPhone does with unknown callers

Apple's Phone and FaceTime settings give you three tools. Each is found under Settings, then Apps, then Phone or FaceTime.

  • Screen Unknown Callers (Phone): choose Never, Ask Reason for Calling, or Silence.
  • Silence Unknown Callers (FaceTime): calls from unknown numbers are silenced and sent to voicemail.
  • Call Filtering, Unknown Callers: missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers move into an Unknown Callers list, which you can see with the Filter button in Recents.

A separate spam filter, also under Call Filtering, silences suspected spam callers and puts them in a Spam list.

Is an unknown caller a scammer?

Not necessarily. Most unknown callers are ordinary: a business, a clinic, a new number for someone you know. But scam calls do come from numbers you haven't saved, and numbers can be spoofed to look like they're local. Not being in your contacts is a reason to be careful, not proof of a scam.

A quick example

You get a call from a number you don't recognise. Your iPhone is set to Ask Reason for Calling, so it asks the caller why they're calling before it rings. A real caller answers and your phone rings. A robocall usually doesn't answer, so you never hear it.

Why it matters

Scam calls rely on getting you to pick up. Callers often have your name, location or relatives' names because your details are listed in data broker and people-search records, which makes the call feel legitimate.

How to protect yourself

  1. 1

Let unknown calls go to voicemail first

Set Screen Unknown Callers to Ask Reason for Calling or Silence. Real callers leave a message.

  2. 2

    Save the numbers you trust

Add family, your doctor's office and your child's school to Contacts so they always get through.

  3. 3

Don't give anything away on an unexpected call

Don't share codes, passwords or card numbers. If the caller claims to be your bank, hang up and call the number on your card.

  4. 4

Reduce how many people can reach you

Serus finds where your phone number is listed and removes it, then watches for it coming back.
