Security delay is Apple's term for a built-in waiting period. It belongs to Stolen Device Protection, a setting on iPhone. Apple describes it as a sequence: you authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, then authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID again before the change goes through.
The idea is simple. If someone steals your unlocked phone, or watches you type your passcode, a passcode alone shouldn't be enough to take over your Apple Account. Without the delay, a thief could change your account password, sign you out and lock you out of your own phone within minutes. With it, they hit a one-hour wall, and you get time to mark the device as lost.
Apple lists examples of changes that trigger it when the iPhone is away from a familiar location such as home or work: changing your Apple Account password, signing out of your account, changing the passcode, adding or removing Face ID or Touch ID, resetting all settings, and turning Stolen Device Protection off. Apple also notes the delay can end early if the iPhone reaches a familiar location.
Security delay vs. related terms
- Two-factor authentication checks a second proof of identity when you sign in. Security delay adds time on top of a biometric check for changes made on the phone itself.
- A passcode unlocks your phone. Stolen Device Protection exists because a passcode alone has been enough for thieves to change account settings.
If you changed your passcode or password and the phone says to wait, that is the delay working, not a fault.
How to protect yourself
- 1
Turn on Stolen Device Protection
Stolen Device Protection is a setting on iPhone. Apple's support guide, linked in the sources, explains how to turn it on.
- 2
Use a strong passcode and cover the screen
The feature exists because a passcode alone shouldn't be enough to change your account. A longer passcode, typed with the screen shielded in public places, still helps.
- 3
Know what to do after a theft
Use Find My on another device to mark the iPhone as lost during the hour, and change your Apple Account password from a trusted device.
- 4
Keep your account recovery details current
Check that the email address and phone number tied to your Apple Account are ones only you control.
See where your personal data is exposed
Serus finds it on data brokers and people-search sites and removes it.
Frequently asked
How long is the security delay?
One hour, followed by a second Face ID or Touch ID check. Apple says it can end early if your iPhone reaches a familiar location.
Does security delay work at home?
Apple describes the delay as applying when the iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. At a familiar location, those changes need only a biometric check.
Can I turn security delay off?
Security delay is part of Stolen Device Protection, which you can turn off in Settings. Turning it off is itself a change that can trigger the delay when you're away from a familiar location.
Does security delay stop a thief using my phone?
No. It protects sensitive account and security changes, not everything on the phone. Mark the device as lost and change your passwords from another device.
