Every time you open a website, your browser downloads text, images and scripts. Instead of fetching all of it again next time, it keeps copies in a cache, a short-term store on your device. Google's help pages describe the browser cache as a temporary record of your browsing that makes parts of pages, like images, open faster on your next visit. Merriam-Webster gives the wider computing meaning: a part of a computer's memory where information is kept so it can be found very quickly.

Apps and phones keep caches too. A streaming app caches thumbnails, a maps app caches tiles, your phone caches photos you've scrolled past.

Why it matters for privacy

A cache is a record of where you've been. Google's help page notes the cache can hold more than page images, including things like responses you typed into forms. Anyone who uses your device, or gets malware onto it, can look through it. On a shared or work computer, that can show what you browsed.

Caches also go stale. A full or outdated cache can stop pages and forms loading properly, and clearing it is the usual fix.

Cached data vs. cookies

Cached data is content the site sent you, stored to save time. Cookies are small files a site uses to recognize you, remember a login or track activity. Browsers list both under "clear browsing data", but they do different jobs. Clearing the cache won't log you out. Clearing cookies usually will.

Search engines also keep cached copies of pages. That's a different thing: it's the engine's copy, not yours, and it can keep showing old content after a site changes it.

How to protect yourself

  1. 1

Clear your cache on shared devices

In your browser's settings, find clear browsing data, pick cached images and files, and clear it. Do it every time you use a library, hotel or work computer.

  2. 2

Use a private window for sensitive browsing

Private or incognito windows throw away the cache and cookies when you close them. They don't hide your activity from your employer, school or internet provider.

  3. 3

    Lock your device

A cache is only as private as the device holding it. Use a screen lock and keep the operating system updated.

  4. 4

Clear app caches when you sell or hand on a device

Sign out of apps, then do a full factory reset so cached files go too.

Frequently asked

Is it safe to clear cached data?

Yes. Pages may load a little slower the first time afterwards because the browser has to download everything again. You keep your bookmarks and saved passwords.

Does clearing the cache delete my passwords?

Not if you only choose cached images and files. Saved passwords and cookies are separate options in the same menu, so check the boxes before you confirm.

Is cached data the same as cookies?

No. The cache stores page content to speed up loading. Cookies identify you to a site and can be used for tracking.
