When your phone shows "No Caller ID" or "Unknown", it has no number to display for the caller. The number may have been withheld on purpose, blocked by the caller's network, or not passed on by the carrier. Apple uses "unknown callers" for something wider: calls from numbers that aren't saved in your contacts.
Is it a scam?
Not always. Doctors' offices, hospitals, employers and some businesses withhold their number. But scammers and telemarketers also like to hide, and you can't tell from the screen which one is calling. Treat any unexpected call that asks for money, codes or personal details with caution, whatever the caller says about who they are.
A concrete example
You get a call with no caller ID. The voice says it's your bank and asks you to read out the code you just received by text. That code is likely a login code for your account, and a real bank doesn't ask for it. Hang up and call the number on the back of your card.
How your phone can handle them
On iPhone, Apple says you can go to Settings, tap Apps, then Phone, and choose what happens to calls from unsaved numbers: ring as usual, ask the caller for their reason for calling before your phone rings, or silence them and send them to voicemail. You can also turn on Call Filtering to move missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers to an Unknown Callers list, and turn on the spam filter.
How it differs from spoofing
A no caller ID call shows nothing. A spoofed call shows a number that isn't real, often one that looks local or belongs to someone else. You can learn more in our entry on spoofing.
How to protect yourself
- 1
Screen or silence unknown callers
On iPhone: Settings, Apps, Phone, then Screen Unknown Callers and pick Ask Reason for Calling or Silence. Add important numbers, like family and your doctor, to Contacts so they always get through.
- 2
Turn on call filtering
In the same Phone settings, Call Filtering moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers to a separate list and lets you silence spam callers.
- 3
Never read out codes or passwords
No real bank, tax office or tech company needs a login code you were sent. Hang up and call back using a number from their website or your card.
- 4
Keep your number off lists
Callers often get your number from data brokers and people-search sites. Serus finds where your phone number is listed and removes it, which cuts down the calls at the source.

Frequently asked
Who calls with no caller ID?
It can be a business, a hospital or a person who hides their number, and it can also be a telemarketer or scammer. The screen alone can't tell you which.
Should I answer a no caller ID call?
You don't have to. If it matters, they'll leave a voicemail. You can also set your phone to ask the caller why they're calling before it rings.
Can I block no caller ID calls?
On iPhone you can silence unknown callers so they go to voicemail. Settings, Apps, Phone, Screen Unknown Callers, Silence.
What does unknown caller mean on iPhone?
Apple means a call from a phone number that isn't saved in your contacts. It isn't the same as no number being shown.
