What does private caller mean?

Definition

A private caller is someone whose phone number is hidden from your screen because they blocked it. The call shows as private or unknown, which is legal and doesn't by itself mean the call is a scam.

When your phone says "private caller", "unknown" or "no caller ID", the person calling has blocked their number from being sent along with the call. The FCC says you can legally block your own number when you make calls, and that doing so is not spoofing.

Blocked is not spoofed

The FCC draws a clear line. If a call comes from an unknown number, the number has been blocked, not necessarily faked. Spoofing is different: the caller shows a false name or number. Under the Truth in Caller ID Act, the FCC prohibits anyone from transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller ID information with intent to defraud, cause harm or wrongly obtain anything of value.

Who calls privately

Blocking is legal, so a hidden number alone tells you very little about who is calling or why. You just can't see.

What to do

The FCC's advice is not to answer calls from unknown numbers. If it matters, the caller can leave a voicemail. If a private caller pushes you to pay, give a code or share personal details, hang up.

How to protect yourself

  1. 1

Let unknown calls go to voicemail

This is the FCC's advice. A real caller with a real reason can leave a message.

  2. 2

Never share codes, passwords or payment details on an unexpected call

No legitimate organisation needs those from you on a call you didn't expect. Hang up and contact the organisation using a number you look up yourself.

  3. 3

    Report unwanted or fraudulent calls

You can file a complaint with the FCC at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.

  4. 4

Reduce how easily callers can find your number

Spam and scam callers often get numbers from data brokers. Serus finds where your phone number is listed and removes it where it can be taken down.

Frequently asked

Is a private caller a scammer?

Not necessarily. Blocking your number is legal. A hidden number just means you can't see who is calling, so be careful with what you share.

Can you find out who a private caller is?

Not from the call itself. If the call matters, ask them to leave a message or contact you another way.

What is the difference between private and spoofed calls?

A private call hides the number. A spoofed call shows a false one. The FCC prohibits spoofing done to defraud, cause harm or wrongly obtain something of value.
